2008 Oldies Marathon

South Bay Garage Band Special

In the 1960's, a ripple effect swept across the entire nation in the wake of 'The British Invasion', prompting many American youths to 'tune in' to their own creative musical intuitions and begin to express themselves in new ways. Neighborhoods all over the country were soon dotted with garage bands of varying looks, sounds....and VOLUME LEVELS !!

The Bay Area had a profound impact on this new era of music, essentially providing the musical pulse of the nation for that time. Much of the mood, the movement and the mentality of the time was being generated right here in the Santa Clara Valley. Although many think of the music of The Bay Area in the 1960's as being synonymous with San Francisco, the truth is that less than 10% of all those influential musicians &/or groups actually came from San Francisco. That meant that better than 90% came from all points surrounding The Bay Area. Groups such as The Warlocks (who eventually became The Grateful Dead), Count Five, The Golliwogs (who later went on to fame as Credence Clearwater Revival), People, The Syndicate of Sound, The Jaguars, The E-Types, Lil Boys Blue, The Tikis (Harper's Bizarre), The Vejtables, The Mojo-Men, The Baytovens, Mourning Reign, Teddy and His Patches, The Fugitives, The Knight Riders, The Other-Side, The Shandels, The Lord Jim Quintet, Good News, The Trolls, The Chocolate Watchband, The Talismen, The New Arrivals, William Penn and His Pals, The Misty Guise and many others. In fact, many of the groups that claimed to be from San Francisco, originated from other locations and simply chose, for marketing purposes, to identify themselves with the city that would be most favorable to booking agents and such.

Since KKUP was founded, back in 1972, right here in Santa Clara County, it has had the privilege of being a prominent voice in the very community that has influenced the musical world for many years. It is with this thought in mind that KKUP prepares to embark upon a program segment dedicated to celebrating and commemorating the musical heritage of this great area (as well as the memories!). 'Tune in, Turn on' to KKUP's inaugural salute to our own local musicians of the 60's, on Sunday, August 17th from Noon to 2:00PM, during our 10th Annual Oldies/Hawaiian Marathon, here at 91.5 FM.

KKUP is entirely supported by our listeners, which means we are very attentive to the responses of our 'Listener Family'. If this is a program format you'd like to hear more of......please tune in......and support this home-community-grown radio station in whatever ways you are able......and CONTACT US to let us know your thoughts!!!
